What does an editor do?

A skilled professional editor is the bridge between author and reader, linking the author’s and reader’s frames of reference.

This can range from a simple check for technical errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar (sometimes referred to as “SPAG”), to more in-depth examination of organization, logic, and structural issues. Developmental editing of a work in progress may look at plot holes, characterization inconsistencies, and similar narrative issues.

What doesn’t an editor do?

An editor won’t invent a plot for you, or do your research for you.
